Alina and Pablo are both members of the Chiaroscuro Quartet, based in London. They received the Andrea Amati violin in on loan from Jonathan Sparey, for an undefined period.
They write: “We adore this violin so very much, not only for its wonderful mesmerising resonance, but for its incredible uniqueness. It is always fun to respond to the question ‘When was it made?’ ‘Fifteen seventy’ we say slowly, and the audience looks at you, assuming you got the century wrong… this reaction never gets boring! On some very rare occasions, we have managed to play in Abbeys built a few years before the violin came to life, and when this happens we of course gladly share this with the audience. It is amazing to think that an instrument that sounds as incredible as this violin does, in spaces ranging from recording studios to the biggest concert halls, could have been made that long ago – it’s a real jewel of human achievement”.
